Finally, an explanation that clicks
The clearest explanation of graphics & design I have come across.
I read this over a couple of weekends alongside a small side project, which turned out to be the ideal way to approach it. The author clearly knows the subject deeply and has thought hard about how to teach it. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. An easy five stars from me. I look forward to whatever the author writes next.
Worth every page. I have already recommended it to two colleagues.
This is the third book I have read on graphics & design this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The chapters on graphics & design are the strongest — the examples are stripped down but complete, and I could follow along without constant guessing. One of those books that pays for itself within the first few chapters. Highly recommended.

I had been on the fence about this one for a while, and I should have bought it sooner. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. Excellent from start to finish. No filler, no padding.
A colleague recommended this and I can see why. It does something that few technical books manage: it respects the reader's time. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. Some terminology is introduced without much ceremony; I had to look a few things up along the way. I have already recommended it to two colleagues and will recommend it to more.
Strong content, uneven pacing. I would still recommend it.

Some of the material is available elsewhere, but rarely presented this clearly. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Worth picking up if you already have the basics. Set realistic expectations and you will get a lot out of it.

Hard to recommend. The examples assume too much and explain too little.
I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. The balance between theory and practice is well judged; neither side dominates. The author clearly knows the subject deeply and has thought hard about how to teach it. A few of the examples could be more realistic, but the underlying points come across clearly. Not one I will be returning to. There are better introductions to javascript available.
