Outstanding introduction

I have read a lot of books on this subject and this is the clearest.

I bought this on a whim after seeing it mentioned in a forum thread, and I am glad I did. I found myself making notes in the margins, which is always a good sign. The early chapters move quickly through material I already knew, but the later sections were genuinely new to me. One of those books that pays for itself within the first few chapters. Highly recommended.

Worth every page

Genuinely excellent — I finished it in a week and immediately started again.

This is the third book I have read on programming this year, and it is comfortably the best of them. The progression from chapter to chapter is well thought out; nothing feels out of order. I appreciated the honesty about what the book does not cover — it saved me from expecting things that were not there. The index and cross-references are surprisingly good, which matters for a book I will come back to. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.

A superb guide

Better than I expected. Rare to find a technical book this well judged.

I came to this book already familiar with the basics, and it still had plenty to offer. The author is unusually honest about where the simplifications break down, which I appreciated. Some of the diagrams are dense and I had to reread a few sections, though that may just be me. Worth the money and the reading time, without hesitation.

Hey everyone, I had a playtester complete almost an entire run of a traditional turn-based roguelike, dying just one floor before the final boss. 😬 I noticed their run took a little over an hour. It got me thinking about what peo…
